Brian M. O'Connell

Brian M. O'Connell — Director and Founder of the Sarteano Chamber Choral Conducting Workshop. MM Choral Conducting, and Certification in Voice Therapy; Boston Conservatory. Ed.D Candidate in Curriculum and Teaching with Music Education emphasis; Boston University.

Brian is currently Director of Choral Activities at Lexington High School in Lexington, Massachusetts. He is also on the Music Education faculty of both The Boston Conservatory where he teaches Graduate Choral Methods, and UMass/Lowell where he teaches Vocal Pedagogy, directs the University Choir and is an advisor to graduate choral conductors.

For fifteen years Brian was director of the Concert Choir at Berklee College of Music. For nine of those years he also served as Chairman of the Voice Department where he developed a unique curriculum geared to the contemporary singer that increased the number of vocal department majors from approximately 30 to 200.

He has been on the faculty of numerous colleges in the New England area such as Tufts University where for several years he served as the Director of Choral Activities. In 1995 he was appointed by Richard Colwell to develop the curriculum for and teach Graduate Choral Methods at New England Conservatory. At Boston University he has taught Conducting I and II, Choral Methods and Choral Conducting. In addition, he was guest conductor at Northeastern University, where he directed the University Choral Society and Chamber Singers.

Performance studies with Lukas Foss. Voice studies with David Blair McClosky and Robert Gartside. Extensive conducting experience with adult choirs, as well as the Handel & Haydn Society Youth Chorus. Past President Massachusetts ACDA. Very active clinician and adjudicator. In 2005, Brian was the first recipient of the Massachusetts ACDA Choral Excellence Award.
